What is Matcha Soda?
Essentially matcha green tea and soda water, sparkling water, or mineral water--any water with bubbles. You can serve it on ice or plain and may have come across canned green tea soda but this is better because it's matcha soda from scratch so you can completely control what's in it and what it tastes like--no soda stream or fancy equipment needed!
Why You'll Love this Recipe
Quick & Easy - This is a five minute homemade carbonated energy drink you can make any time you need a lil pep in your step without the caffeine crash associated with coffee. See also: simple cinnamon tea!
Refreshing - Matcha and soda water is perfect for a hot day and lighter than an iced matcha latte. I love it when I want to switch up my matcha routine.
I drink matcha almost every day so I've made it so many delicious ways like my pistachio matcha latte or the matcha green smoothie. And if you want a DRINK drink, check out one of my most popular matcha recipes: matcha martini!
What You'll Need for this Recipe
Matcha, of course. I recommend ceremonial grade, organic matcha for the best quality and taste. Check out my favorite high quality matcha brand.
Sparkling Water like Top Chico or the bubbly brand of your choice. Club soda also works.

Substitutions & Variations
Sweetener - I sip my fizzy matcha unsweetened but feel free to sweeten it with maple syrup to keep it vegan or honey ginger syrup or even a sugar syrup like my hibiscus simple syrup for extra razzle dazzle!
Flavor - Add a splash of citrus for matcha lemon soda or lavender syrup for a calming DIY green tea soda. The options are endless.
How to Make a Matcha Soda from Scratch
Step One: Dissolve the matcha powder in hot water.
Step Two: Pour into a glass of sparkling water over ice and enjoy!
Pro Tip: I use either a bamboo whisk or a frothing wand to combine the matcha and hot water. Both options are quick and the bamboo whisk is more aligned with traditional ceremonial preparation.
Frequently Asked Questions
I don't recommend making this drink ahead of time because the bubbles in the sparkling water will go flat.
Mix one tablespoon of matcha with four ounces boiling water. Fill a pitcher with ice and 32 ounces sparkling water then pour in matcha and stir. Serves four.

I love all things matcha so this was right up my alley! I always have sparkling water on deck, I literally just used a can of LaCroix that I had in my fridge. Perfect drink recipe and a nice little twist on traditional matcha.
