What You'll Need for this Recipe

Japanese Matcha Powder - I recommend using an unsweetened organic ceremonial grade matcha for the best flavor and bright green color that isn't muddy.
Chai Syrup - I make an easy homemade chai syrup in about 20 minutes to keep on deck for lattes. My DIY syrup actually has the right ingredients to make a mean matcha brown sugar chai latte.
Alternatively, you could use a store-bought syrup like Monin concentrate or Torani chai tea spice syrup.

Milk - I make my green tea matcha chai latte with almond milk but you can use any plant-based milk of your choice to keep the recipe vegan or use a dairy milk, except for buttermilk!
Dirty Chai Matcha - Just add instant espresso powder or a shot of brewed espresso.
Hot or Iced - Whether you like to order your matcha chai hot or prefer it over ice, this recipe works.
Add-Ins - You can mix in protein powder, adaptogens or whatever boosts you like to make this latte even more nutritionally powerful.
How to Make a Homemade Matcha and Chai Latte
Hot Chai Matcha Latte

Step One: Dissolve the matcha powder and chai syrup in hot water.

Step Two: Heat the milk then use a frothing wand (electric whisk) to make it foamy.
Pro Tip #1: A bamboo whisk, fork or frothing wand will all work to dissolve the matcha powder.
Pro Tip #2: For step two, you can also pulse the steamed milk in your blender to make it foamy. Or, if you have a milk steamer appliance, you can simply pour your milk into it.

Step Three: Pour the steamed milk and chai matcha mixture into a mug.

Step Four: Garnish with a sprinkle of spices or star anise (optional).
Matcha Chai Iced Latte

Step One: Add matcha powder, milk, and chai simple syrup to a blender and pulse to combine.

Step Two: Pour into a glass over ice.

Step Three: Serve with a straw for coffee-house aesthetic (optional).

Hot or Iced Chai Matcha Latte at Home
Equipment
- 1 heat safe container
- 1 Blender
Ingredients
- 1-2 teaspoons matcha powder
- 1 ounce chai syrup
- 2 ounces boiling water for hot version
- 6-8 ounces milk
- ice for iced version
Instructions
To Make a Hot Chai Matcha Latte
- Dissolve the matcha powder and chai simple syrup in boiling water with a bamboo whisk or frothing wand.
- Heat six ounces milk to steaming (but not boiling) then carefully swirl frothing wand just below the surface of the milk to create latte style foam.
- Pour prepared chai matcha mixture and steamed milk into a mug and serve warm.
To Make an Iced Matcha Chai Latte
- Add matcha powder, chai syrup, and eight ounces milk to blender and pulse until uniform and foamy (about one minute).
- Pour into a highball glass over ice and serve cold.
Notes
- In a small saucepan, dissolve 2 cups of brown sugar, 1 ½ tablespoon ground ginger, 3 teaspoon ground cinnamon, 2 teaspoon ground allspice, 1 ½ teaspoon ground clove, 1 ½ teaspoon ground cardamom, 1 ½ teaspoon ground black pepper, and 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg in 1 ¾ cup water over medium heat on stove top.
- Bring the mixture to a boil then reduce heat to low and simmer for 10 minutes.
- Remove from heat and cool fully before using in cocktails. Makes 24 servings.
