What is milk punch?
The classic American southern milk punch is an alcoholic cocktail made with milk or cream or both. Milk punch is cold and creamy but not as rich as eggnog. Think of it as an American iteration of coquito with no curing required. And instead of rum, brandy, specifically, cognac is the traditional spirit used--especially in New Orleans.
Milk punch can be clarified, which is an English practice where the milk solids are curdled and filtered out, leaving behind a mellow flavor. And you can use almost any spirit in clarified milk punch--from mezcal to tequila to vodka or gin. But that's not the version we're making today.

What You'll Need for this Recipe

Half & Half for creaminess that's not too rich. You can use plain milk for make milk punch but I like to balance it with some cream for extra indulgence without making the punch overly thick.
Bourbon and Brandy add booziness and warm flavor notes of vanilla, oak, and fruit. Use whichever brand you prefer. I like Kentucky or Texas bourbon and actually typically use Hennessy cognac for a soulful twist because cognac is technically a type of brandy.
Ginger Syrup in place of regular simple syrup adds a nice cozy spice note and honey sweetness that is actually perfect for the holiday season. You can also use cinnamon syrup or your favorite zero sugar option or try my chai simple syrup for extra spiciness!
Nutmeg is non-negotiable! The aroma and flavor it adds to every sip is part of what makes this punch so special. Fresh grated nutmeg is best but you can also use a sprinkle of ground nutmeg.

Substitutions & Variations
By the Glass - If you aren't entertaining thirsty folks, you can craft a single or double serving of milk punch by dividing the ingredients by eight.
Frozen - This milk punch batch recipe can be made frozen with all the same ingredients. Just blend instead of stirring!
Liquor Options - You can use your favorite kind of whiskey, including scotch, instead of bourbon. And even though cognac brandy is the traditional spirit for milk punch, you can omit it if you don't like it. Dark rum or spiced rum will also work. Lastly, amaretto liqueur is a great addition if you're a fan of nutty flavors.
Vanilla - I like to use vanilla extract or vanilla bean paste to round out the flavors in this recipe so you can use either. You can also scrape the seeds from a vanilla bean pod if you want to go full gourmet.
Vegan - Use plant-based milk and cream, like almond milk or coconut milk to make this recipe dairy free and vegan friendly.
Zero Proof - Want a non-alcoholic milk punch? Just leave out the liquor. Virgin milk punch without alcohol tastes great, too or you can add in your favorite spirit-free substitute.

Yes, you can prepare milk punch up to three weeks in advance. This makes Christmas party prep smoother but that's only if you can restrain yourself from excessive sampling in the meantime!
Store refrigerated and sealed in an airtight container. Keeps for up to one month, depending on the expiration date of the milk used.
How to Serve
Milk punch can be served hot but I like it ice cold, so I recommend adding ice to each glass in addition to mixing over ice. Either way, it's perfect for Christmas parties!
Crushed ice is my recommendation for aesthetic but use what you like and have available. This is light and easy drink so people tend to drink it faster, which means you don't have to worry about the ice melting quickly.

I made this punch for Christmas Eve and you didn’t lie it only took me five minutes! We actually like it better than eggnog because it’s lighter. But still strong! Thanks again!
