❤️ Why You'll Love this Recipe
Quick and Easy - This recipe for sweet potato flavored syrup comes together in under 15 minutes with simple ingredients you probably already have in your kitchen. You won't need any fancy tools or advanced techniques to cook it.
Soulful Flavor - Y'all, this sweet potato infused sugar syrup tastes just like Soul Food candied yams! It has all of the key flavor elements of slow cooked syrupy sweet potatoes bottled up in a liquid form you can add to a cocktail--minus the butter so it's actually vegan.
We love sweet potato flavored thangs around here like my bourbon sweet potato pie, pecan sweet potato casserole, sweet potato ice cream, and even savory mashed sweet potatoes!
What You'll Need for this Recipe

Sweet Potato Puree provides earthy and rich flavor that we love so much. I recommend using my pure sweet potato puree recipe for the best results but you can also grab canned puree if that's easier.
Brown Sugar adds sweetness with a hint of molasses flavor. It also dominates the color of the syrup so if you want more of an orange color, you can use granulated sugar instead. I love the full-bodied flavor of brown sugar (dark or light) so it's a trade-off I'm willing to make.
Spices like cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg enhance the syrup with warming sweetness. Use the best quality ground spices you can get.

Substitutions & Variations
Vanilla - You can use vanilla extract, vanilla paste or straight vanilla beans (from the pod) interchangeably in this recipe, depending on whichever you have available.
Sweetener - Feel free to substitute honey, maple syrup or agave for the sugar. You can also use your favorite zero sugar option like stevia or monkfruit.
How to Make Sweet Potato Simple Syrup

- Step 1: Add all the ingredients to a saucepan over medium-low heat.

- Step 2: Stir until sugar and spices dissolve and the liquid is uniform.
Pro Tip #1
Room temperature or even warm sweet potato puree works best in this recipe because it's easier to stir into the other syrup ingredients.

- Step 3: Bring the mixture to a boil then cut the heat and allow to cool.

- Step 4: Transfer cooled syrup to an airtight container to store.
Frequently Asked Questions
Store the syrup in an airtight container and refrigerate. Because there's actual sweet potato in the syrup, it will keep for just about one week.
To freeze, transfer syrup to a freezer safe container to store for up to three months. I recommend freezing in ice or candy molds for easier thawing and use. Keep in mind that, based on the sugar content, the syrup might not freeze completely solid.
How to Use
Drinks are probably the most obvious uses for my sweet potato flavored syrup. Swap it in for plain simple syrup in your favorite cocktail recipe (like my sweet potato syrup old fashioned). And it's fabulous for coffee--hot or iced--from flavored drip coffee to a homemade sweet potato latte with espresso.
Don't stop at drinks, though: drizzle this sweet sauce over ice cream or use it as a unique cake glaze or filling between layers.
