What You'll Need for this Recipe

Grits, of course! I like to use white, stone-ground grits for this recipe, but you can use yellow grits instead, or even quick grits, if that's what you have. Just pay attention to the cooking time and instructions if using quick grits.
Sweet Potato Puree gives us the color and flavor of sweet potatoes in grits. My roasted sweet potato puree is simple to make, and I use it in a ton of recipes, so it's always on deck. You can also use store-bought puree.

Substitutions & Variations
Chicken Broth adds savory flavor to this dish, but you can use any broth or stock you prefer, including veggie broth or turkey bone broth. Water works, too, though the grits won't have as much flavor.
Cheese - Add up to one cup of your favorite shredded cheese, if you like. Sweet potato gouda grits, anyone? I recommend shredding or grating the cheese at home since bagged shredded cheese typically has anti-caking ingredients added to it that produce a weird texture when melted.
Vegan - Use a dairy-free cream, vegetable broth, and plant-based butter alternative to make this a vegan recipe.
How to Make Sweet Potato Grits at Home

- Step One: Bring the chicken broth to a boil, then stir in the grits. (Photos 1 and 2)
- Step Two: Allow the grits to cook through and absorb all the liquid. (Photo 3)
- Step Three: Stir in the sweet potato, heavy cream, butter, and spices off heat. (Photo 4)
Pro Tip #1
If you want to make these grits cheesy, add your cheese during the last step and stir until it's all melted and smooth.
Frequently Asked Questions
Store the grits in an airtight container in the refrigerator. They will keep for up to four days. They will become stodgy once cold; however, they'll loosen up when warmed. Just reheat in the microwave or on the stove top with a splash of water or chicken broth.
To freeze, cool the grits to room temperature, then transfer to an airtight, freezer-safe container and place in the freezer for up to four months.

How to Serve
Serve these grits warm with a pat of butter on top, for extra indulgence! These are great with homemade sausage patties and eggs in the morning--add fluffy buttermilk biscuits and crispy breakfast potatoes to make it a family feast.
Or enjoy them as a lunch or dinner side dish with crispy catfish, sticky short ribs, or southern pot roast. These grits go great in Texas-style shrimp and grits, too.
And don't sleep on grits in your Soul Food Sunday dinner menu!
