Benefits of Maca
Maca is a root vegetable native to Peru and has been used as a nutritional supplement there for generations. Maca root is rich in many vitamins and minerals including iron, iodine, and calcium. I try to have maca every day to help me manage the effects of PCOS but it's benefits can be attractive even to people who don't have hormonal and metabolic disorders.
So why do women with PCOS take maca? It is reported to boost energy, help balance hormone levels, and support fertility. As a reported adaptogen, maca helps the body adapt to stress, anxiety, etc. and is supposed to help heal adrenal fatigue.
What You'll Need for this Recipe
You only need a few quality ingredients to make my maca morning drink and can certainly adjust it to your taste. Here's what to add to your grocery list.
- Almond Milk
- Cayenne
- Cinnamon
- Honey
- Maca Root Powder
- Sea Salt
- Vanilla Extract
As far as tools, I like to mix everything up in a large glass measuring cup to keep mess to a minimum. From there, it's easy to transfer this PCOS healthy latte recipe into a mug and sip. Use a frothing wand to mix everything well and get those foamy coffeehouse vibes at home!
What does it taste like?
Maca has a butterscotch or caramel-like taste and creates a rich, thick texture when mixed with milk. I add vanilla extract to help smooth out the flavor. Cinnamon and cayenne, which are also good ingredients for balanced hormones, add a cozy kick of spice. Despite the flavor, maca is not super sweet on its own so I recommend honey to taste. You can also use maple syrup to make a vegan maca drink or another nutritive sweetener of choice.
How to Serve this Latte
You can enjoy this moon milk with maca powder hot or iced so it's truly a drink with no season! Because of the energy-boosting benefits, it's also known as maca coffee--though there's no caffeine in it--and many people prefer it hot. I like to garnish with extra dashes of cinnamon and cayenne and even a cinnamon stick.
If you go for the hot version, be sure your milk is steamed but not boiled so as to keep the maca health benefits in tact. Too much heat is thought to diminish some of its superfood qualities.
I hope this is a helpful option for what to drink when you have PCOS. And sharing is caring so be sure to pin this caffeine free morning latte and follow me over on Pinterest. Thanks for reading!
