Take a peek at the visual game plan for updating my large mid-century bungalow kitchen, including quick changes to fixtures, finishes, and colors, as well as bigger upgrades like marble counter tops.
Just over five years into homeownership, I'm seriously planning the kitchen makeover in my 1950s ranch-style house. I started this process my second year in and am entering the final phase with perfect timing because I work from home full-time now. Like many of my other room makeovers, I'm finding a lot of what I need for my kitchen project from Wayfair! Let's start with the items I've already purchased and am currently adding to cart.

My Wayfair Kitchen Makeover Picks
- For this kitchen makeover project, I'm having a quiet stainless steel dishwasher installed because I'm simply tired of doing dishes every day, especially now that I no longer live alone!
- One accessible change I can't wait to make is installing peel-and-stick subway tile backsplash. I love a good DIY and want this overall project to be quick but impactful so this is a wonderful middle ground. Bonus, it's on sale.
- Even though I don't plan to spend copious amounts of time at the kitchen sink anymore, I have my eye on this apron sink with two sections--one for prep and one for dishes, as well as this extendable faucet.
- I currently have a perfectly good fridge but a girl can dream about this fancy four-door, right?
- A set of semi-sheer Roman shades are already here and waiting to be installed to add some earthiness and color balance to my kitchen. It gets a lot of lovely natural light, which can make all the white and cool colors appear almost too bright.
- I'm not doing anything to my floors but have already ordered two anti-fatigue mats to slide in front of the sink and stove. During marathon cooking session, like Thanksgiving dinner, my feet tend to get worn out.
- My kitchen has a peninsula but I need a moveable island for additional storage with recipe development and food photography.
- I'm still happy with my cabinet color but want to set it off with updated modern pulls.
The Starting Points: Past and Present
Below and on the left is what my kitchen looked like at closing about five years ago. Gross, right? From the tiled countertops to the greenish-brown cabinet color, I had to make some immediate changes before moving in. However, my budget was tight. So I had the cabinets painted used a marble-look kit on the counters until I had more time and funds to thoughtfully plan the full vibe of my kitchen, which brings us to the current stat one the right.
You would think that the kitchen would have been my first order of business since I love cooking but I'm glad I didn't dive in with major changes because what I would have gone for just a year ago isn't what I want now. A few year's worth of research and working in this kitchen (a lot) have taught me some thangs! This kitchen makeover mood board helps me to organize my thoughts and vision for the room and is something I can refer to when shopping at Wayfair.
Since this isn't my forever home, I want to make smart decisions that will benefit me when attracting buyers or renters down the line. I hope you'll stay tuned for the process and final room reveal. Love where you're going with it. We just finished our kitchen and kept our cabinets too. You don't need to tear out everything to make a huge improvement. Best wishes!

You’ve made good progress so far with the changes you’ve already done. My favorite update is the butcher block for the counters. I think that’s going to look so good!

I think so, too. It's an option I hadn't previously considered and am excited about it. Thanks for reading!

Your to-do list is very realistic and I think you're going to do an amazing job. I have heard of painting floors but don't know anyone that has actually done it.
